Of course, such a piece of legislation should be buttressed by sound, compelling reasoning and consistent enforcement. Citizens who bleat and whine about a draconian law and overkill and overreach should be encouraged to rather set themselves on fire. That should be expressly forbidden as well. This includes religious groupings who claim to celebrate certain holidays and events with setting the skies ablaze with fireworks. In other words, it should lay down the law and all transgressors should be fully aware of the consequences of breaking such law. In instances where the state does intervene, I believe, it should do so unapologetically, decisively and brook no contradiction. And I’m not referring to half-hearted, limp-wristed legislation or restrictions that permit the use of fireworks under certain circumstances. However, I think in the case of fireworks, the state should intervene. Not restrictions or special permission to rend the nights asunder on certain occasions but a complete ban!Īs a rule of thumb, I think sensible adults should be afforded the space to make up their own minds about things with very little interference, if any, from the state. Although I consider myself someone of a very accommodating disposition, wide tolerances and generally live by the dictum “Live and let live”, I am quite prepared to assist in lobbying efforts for an outright ban of fireworks.
